League top scorer Makwatta moves to Slovakia

The 2016 SportPesa Premier League Golden Boot winner John Mark Makwatta has left Ulinzi Stars for Slovakian club FC Nitra.

Makwatta is expected to fly out of Kenya on Wednesday afternoon for the east European country where he has signed a six-month contract.

Ulinzi coach Benjamin Nyangweso said they would miss the proven goal scorer.

“Makwatta is a player whom we had been banking on for this season so we shall definitely miss him, but some of these things are unavoidable. I choose to look on the brighter side because his departure means that those who have remained behind must now step up and prove they are good enough to play for Ulinzi.

“Personally, I wish him the very best as he advances his career and the challenge is on us now to find a suitable replacement for him. I am happy for him,” Nyangweso added.

The 24-year old striker joined the Kenya Defence Forces side in June 2014 from Nairobi City Stars. He finished as the club top scorer in the 2015 and 2016 league seasons.

He lit up the 2016 season, winning the league’s Golden Boot with 15 goals. This naturally attracted suitors far and wide, including from Zambian clubs Buildcon and Nkana.

FC Nitra is a second division club founded in 1909. The club’s home venue is the 11,000-seater Štadión pod Zoborom in Nitra town.
