Freiman Mukanga Joe, who performs under the name Oksyde, wanted to be king back in 2014 but things have changed. He “was born king and is still king” and he stands by his statement.
The rapper has been making music for a few years and says that the chemistry between him and his fans is the best thing about performing live.
Let’s start with your most recent song “Atiyo Matek”, what does that mean?
It means “I am working hard in Luo”.
Why that song?
It was inspired by the struggles of the Kenyan artiste. An artiste works twice as hard and still they want to underpay us. Basically, the chorus – where I say – atiyo matek adwaro pesa mangeny means “I work hard so pay me more.”
How would you describe your experience working with Khaligraph Jones?
It’s always a great experience. We’ve been working closely for almost 7 years now.
Is there anyone, in particular, you play your songs for first just to get their feedback before you release them?
Yeah of course. A few Deejays close to my circle and my team.
You once declared, back in 2014, “I want to be king” how’s that going?
Was born King, been king, still king.
I’ll take that. Does the live performance aspect of being a musician ever bother you? What do you like most about performing live?
I am one of the few artists who put their all when it comes to performances. In my humble opinion; I am the best performer in the 254. The best thing about performing live is the chemistry between the artist and the fans.
Should we be looking forward to any live performances from you soon?
For now, I’d say keeping checking all my social media handles -@oksydemusik for more information.
Great music. 2017 is all about anthems.
How would you describe yourself in three words?
Talented, humble and hardworking.
Most rappers have rappers who have inspired them, name your top 5.
Das Efx, Rhapsody, Cassidy, Big El and Rakim.
What’s on your iPod/phone/music system?
A lot of new Kenyan music.
Rap is the best thing to ever happen to music.
Name one thing you can’t live without?
