Kenyatta University lecturers demand for substantive VC

By KBC Reporter

Kenyatta University lectures held a peaceful demonstration demanding the appointment of a Vice Chancellor.

The dons vowed to block the Thika Superhighway to press for their demands.

Under the auspices of Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU), Kenya University Staff Union (KUSU) and Kenya Union of Domestic, Hotel, Educational Institutions, Health and Allied workers (KUDHEIHA), the union leaders called for the disbandment of the university council and the reconstitution of a new one.

The post of Vice Chancellor fell vacant early this year following the retirement Prof Olive Mugenda. Prof Paul Wainaina is the acting VC since March.

Among a raft of issues the lecturers are demanding is the new teaching and referral hospital be put under the university management and are opposed to the proposal to appoint Prof Mugenda the facility’s chief executive.

The Union have given the Attorney General until tomorrow, (Friday) to resolve the transition crisis at the university failure to which they would start picketing next week.

Addressing a workers’ meeting at the graduation square , UASU chapter secretary George Lukoye said the unions were opposed to plans by the current council members led by the chairman Prof Ratemo Michieka which he claimed was unconstitutional.
