IEBC to release number of new registered voters

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission will Tuesday release the number of new registered voters.
This is after the mass voter registration exercise was extended by a further five days which ended on Sunday. The commission has also commenced registration of prisoners and will register Diaspora voters before the end of the month.
To enhance the right of prisoners to participate in the electoral process and compliance with the Supreme Court decision, the process of enlisting inmates as voters commenced Monday morning until the 27th of February 2017.
The electoral commission will create the registration centers based on the data to be received from the State Department for Correctional Services.
The registration process of inmates in 118 prisons will however see those in correctional facilities vote for presidential candidates only.
Registration of Kenyans in Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda and South Africa is also expected to kick off this month.
However, Kenyans residing in other countries might not vote come the August poll as the commission says it is faced with logistical challenges to spread the service beyond these five countries.
The mass voter registration ended on Sunday but with low turnout being reported at registration centers on the five days extended mass voter registration exercise.
- 1 million Kenyans had registered as new voters one week before the 14th February deadline.
