Nyeri Senator Mutahi Kagwe has joined the Nyeri gubernatorial race running on the jubilee party ticket.

Kagwe announced his decision to contest the seat that was until recently held by the late Governor, Nderitu Gachagua, who passed on two weeks ago.

The former Information and Broadcasting Minister said his decision was driven by the need to see a technology-driven county where the agriculture, service and the Information and communication technology sectors will get priority.

“My vision is to see Nyeri become the first “smart county” where technology is used to create employment and manage resources”, the senator said.

He joins a crowded race that includes former Vision 2030 Director, Dr Wahome Gakuru, a Director of the White Rhino Hotel, Patrick Munene, Athi Water Services Board Chair, Wachira Keen, chicken breeder, Dr Thuo Mathenge, and businessman Githinji Kinyanjui.

Mr. Samuel Wamathai who was Deputy Governor before succeeding the late Gachagua has also announced that he is in the race while a brother of the late governor, Mr Geoffrey Rigathi Gachagua, was also reported in a section of the media today to have joined the fray.

Kagwe promised a transformative leadership honed during a ten-year stint as Commercial Director of the Standard Group, as MP for Mukurweini and as Minister for Information and Broadcasting during the initial stages of the development of the ICT sector in the country.

He said his leadership will steer the county towards the exploitation of it’s tourism potential and the development of e-health where the local hospitals will be fiber-linked to be able to benefit from health expertise from around the world.

He added that if elected, Nyeri will be the destination of choice for medical cases that currently have to be flown to India.
