Chess champions head to S. Africa for World Scholars Championship

Two junior chess players Sumit Deshpande, Adit Shah and Isha Gala will represent the country in the World scholars cup championship later this year in South Africa.

The three will be seeking to defend their title that they won during the 2016 edition in Bangladesh.

Sumit Deshpande who plays for Checkmates chess club in the national chess league is set to lead his team mates Adit and Isha to the global event and hopes to better their performance for another impressive win.

The three pupils at Oshwal Academy recently won the East African regional championship that was held at Karen Nairobi to qualify to the African regional round that will be held in Pretoria South Africa later this year.

The junior division includes students up to 14 years old while the senior division is for students aged 15 and older.

As the World Scholar’s Cup is built around teams of three, two-person teams will be required to reach the same threshold as three-person teams to receive berths to the Global Round and the Tournament of Champions.
